Recipe: Ma’s Apple Pie
My grandma “Ma” made the most delicious apple pie and it’s been a staple in our home throughout the years.
With Thanksgiving coming up next week and Christmas around the corner, I thought I would share this treasured family recipe with you. You’ll notice some not-so-specific measuring units as my grandmother shared her recipe with me in her words… “by guess and by gosh!”
In 2014, our youngest daughter’s first married Thanksgiving she made it for her family in Atlanta, while I made it in Orlando for ours, and my mom made it in Minnesota! THREE generations all made the same pie - so special! Whether you’re hosting or bringing a dessert to a gathering with friends of family, this recipe is sure to be a hit!
Here is a picture below of one of the most thoughtful gifts I’ve ever received. Last Christmas, my daughter-in-law Ashley turned the handwritten recipe from my grandma into a beautiful hand towel. Now I’ll always have a copy of her recipe, in HER handwriting! How amazing is that??
INGREDIENTS
Pie crust - I typically buy instead of making homemade, tastes just as good and much less effort!
1 1/2 - 2 cups apples, “greenings” (Granny Smith apples) are the best, or Jonathan’s
1 cup sugar
1/4-1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (can also use cinnamon instead)
2 teaspoons butter (margarine will do, but use twice as much)
Pinch of salt
INSTRUCTIONS
Use 1 1/2-2 cups apples, “Greenings” (Granny Smith apples) are best, or Jonathan’s and slice. Pile apples rounded once sliced. Add large cup of sugar and 1/4-1/2 teaspoon nutmeg over sugar, then 2 level teaspoons of real butter. Margarine will do, but use twice as much. Also, put in pinch of salt over sugar.
Wet crust all around before adding top crust, then make 6-8 holes in top crust with small paring knife.
Take 350° until done. Brown and syrup bubbles out of holes. My mom says roughly an hour. She makes day before and bakes early Thanksgiving morning before putting turkey in. Then doesn’t get “mushy!”
Roll out any leftover crust and sprinkle with sugar & cinnamon as a teaser!
Lots of times we would pick the apples off the tree in my grandmother’s backyard!
I’d love to know if you give this recipe a try!
Gratefully,
Jennifer
